Cart abandonment is one of the most expensive leaks on any ecommerce store. On this sneaker and streetwear store's mobile cart, only about half of the shoppers who reached the cart continued to checkout. Our AI hypothesized that the cart page carried no urgency or scarcity message of any kind, and thus proposed an experiment that tested four urgency messages on the first cart item to find the one that encouraged more of them to continue to a purchase.
Hypothesis: Adding an urgency badge to the primary product in the cart creates time pressure, overcoming shopper hesitation and driving visitors to complete their purchase immediately.
What we A/B tested:

The winning variation: "Only a few units left" beat every other variation. It was the only message that drove a significant lift in shoppers reaching the checkout. Why? It named something the shopper stood to lose. Social proof badges like "N people bought this" only prove popularity; they don't give a reason to act right now.
The impact:
- +20.5% purchase conversion
- +17.7% revenue per visitor
Takeaways:
- Simple changes often win. All four variations used the same badge in the same slot. Sometimes you don't need a heavy feature build to move the needle, and it’s the small tweaks that can make a big impact.
- Match the copy to the intent. "Only a few units left" won because it met the shopper exactly where they were. Since they had just picked a size, the warning felt personal. Social proof messages failed doing that, likely because it ignored that step.
- Urgency is a tradeoff, not a free win. Purchase conversion (CVR) rose 20.5% while average order value (AOV) dropped 2.3%, and revenue per visitor (RPV) still rose 17.7%. In this case, the tradeoff between AOV and CVR was well worth it.
